Illustrator Workshop

Practicing

The illustrator workshop was held in July 2009 at the Teacher Training School in Phnom Penh. This workshop was not very far from the Writer Workshop. The workshop was also sponsored by "Room to Read". Activities were designed to encourage young artists to become more involved with art and improve their skills. I decided to attend in this workshop because I enjoy drawing very much, and thought I would have a chance to meet some famous Cambodian artists.

Using Colors

I do not go to school for art, and my artist friends can only help me learn a little. I never used colors to make my art, but when I attend in this workshop I learned how to use colors. There were many different kinds of artists there, and most of them live and work in Phnom Pehn, but some came from different provinces all around Cambodia. I had a chance to meet all of these artists. They had their own style for how to make their own works. They were very friendly, and they like to share. I learned many things from them. We learned about using pencil to make drawings, direction, and motion lines.

Book Cover

We worked on making book covers, and thumbnail stories. Then we went to the primary school again and showed them our thumbnail picture stories. We asked them to tell us about the characters in the stories just by looking at the pictures.

Group member

We played games with the children and drew pictures with them. Some knew how to draw, but other did not. When we left the school and came back to the workshop, we did an evaluation of what happened in the field. This workshop taught us how to make better illustrations for children's books.

Clever Little Girl

I learned how to use the pencil better, how to draw faces better, and it was the first time for me to use colors. I learn some style from famous artists, and about the history of Cambodian art.

All Artist

Being five days in this workshop made me felt like I have entered into the world of art. I enjoy this workshop and had so much fun making art with my new artists friends. They were very friendly. We gave feedback to each other on how to improve, and I could learn from them as I never been to art school.
